Home and School – the National Parents Association is a nongovernmental organization that operates without any affiliation to political parties or religious organizations. Parents and legal guardians can become members of Home and school and other parties can become supporting members. The organization offers advice and support to parents and other parents’ associations and publishes an annual magazine and various types of educational resources on upbringing, education and parental cooperation. In addition to these activities Home and school hosts Iceland’s Safer Internet Center and its SAFT project (Safety, Awareness, Facts and Tools) that aims at raising awareness on safe and positive internet use among children and young people in Iceland.
The organization was founded on September 17th 1992. Its goal is to strive for better conditions of education and upbringing for children and teenagers. Thousands of parents are members of Home and School and with their support we have succeeded in building a support network for parents and their associations. Home and School cooperates with various governmental and nongovernmental bodies at national and local levels in projects that educate parents and support them in their parental role.
Information for Foreign Parents
The City of Reykjavik has issued a policy on the issue of children who have Icelandic as a second language. Emphasis is laid on well organized integration, multicultural teaching methods and the great value of cultural diversity. In every school there is a host program for children of foreign origin and if needed an individual plan is made for each pupil. It is important that parents support their child in developing their language abilities, Icelandic as well as their mother tongue, cultural understanding and social integration. In order to ensure a successful integration parents and schools also need to work closely together. Every school has an active parents´ association and within every class, parents elect class representatives. Foreign parents are particularly encouraged to participate in this work. For further information see Compulsory schools – Information for Foreign Parents.
The Parental Consensus in English
The parental consensus is a guide that class representatives and teachers can utilize to start a discussion on the role of parents in their children’s upbringing and enhance understanding of the importance of cooperation and parental involvement in their children’s education.
